Today I reviewed and collected the 6.2 Extra Practice sheets.
Several of the students had not completed this assignment.
Students are asked to preview 6.3 this weekend. For those students that had completed the 6.2 work, I provided a tutorial today in class.
Redoing the assigned questions a few times is recommended for any student that got less than 80% correct. Repetition is the only way to really become proficient in this skill.

Key concepts:
Assignment Text - 6.2 Q. 5,6,8,9,11,12,13
Key concepts:
- preservation of equality - if you do something to one side then do the same thing to the other side, keep both sides balanced
- always verify your answer - rewrite the equation, substitute for the variable and solve step by step
- don't take shortcuts - always do everything step by step

Today the students had an opportunity to correct their unit 5 test using a calculator.
The tests are being remarked and this grade will be the final test grade.
Any tests that are lower than 50% will generate an "I" and will require a rewrite to pass the unit.
I am hoping that this extra class will be enough to allow students to fully demonstrate their understanding.
If you are away today, you can correct your test on Thursday after school during the ASES session.

April 19th - Studying Strategy
When doing assignments it is best to try all the questions and complete them step by step. This means to show your work in a very organized way.
After you have finished all the questions, check you answers. If you got any questions wrong, review the section of the text or your notes and try to figure out where you went wrong and correct your work.
Now you should have the questions all corrected.
You may think you are finished but you really do need to do a little more. Redo any questions you got wrong. If you can redo them and not make any mistakes, you are ready to move on.
It is often a good idea to try any difficult questions a day or two later to see if you can still do them.
If you do this on a fairly regular basis, you will find that you start making fewer mistakes and you should do much better on your tests. Much of the work is cumulative, meaning that the content will build on previous content. If you don't have a solid foundation, it will become increasingly difficult to do well.
If you need help with study skills or need new strategies to improve your grades, see your teachers or the school counselor.

If the pink hexagon is one then how many units will fit into the large hexagon that is outlined in blue? If the entire pattern was repeated 4 times how may units would there be? (think four blue hexagons)

Today the class began the fractions unit. In grade 8 students will learn to multiply and divide fractions.
As an introduction the class reviewed the the parts of a fraction, how to read the value of a fraction, making equivalent fractions and adding fractions.
In this lesson the class used music notes to represent fractions. Whole notes through 1/16 notes were introduced.
For next class students will need to create a two measure rhythm using a variety of note values. This is a percussion rhythm and only needs a single voice. (Clapping the hands will work.)
If you have ice cream tubs, glass bottles or other disposable items that can be used to produce a sound, please send them to school. One per student would be great. A drum practice pad, wood block, clave, triangle or other inexpensive percussion instrument would also be great. PLEASE DO NOT send expensive or irreplaceable items as I can not ensure their safe return.

Explored the science curriculum.
Students are asked to find a topic of interest from the science text to research.
Criteria - must be a broad topic and must be directly related to the grade 8 science curriculum.
Goal - to explore the topic in depth and become an expert. I plan to focus on research skills and asking well formulated questions.
This is a long range assignment and will require the students to keep notes in some form.
I hope to have the students represent their learning in a variety of ways.
More to follow.

Students will need to complete the homework package below as they complete the section in the text.
For example, if the class has completed section 1.1 in the text, the student will then need to complete section 1.1 in the homework package. I will let the students know this as we go through.
There are paper copies of the homework package that will be provided to the student. Should the paper copy be lost the student will need to download below and print out a new copy. I am hoping that posting a soft copy on the site will make it easier for parents to help their child with completing their assignments.
The homework package work is VERY important and will represent a large portion of my formative assessment. This formative assessment will be combined with a final unit test to generate a grade.

Oct. 22nd.
The class reviewed the Cartesian grid quickly today (x,y grid in four quadrants Q1 = (x)(y), Q2 = (-x)(y), Q3 = (-x)(-y) Q4 = (x)(-y)
The class also reviewed how to find the area of a square by dividing it into a square and four triangles then adding up the parts to find the overall area. (this is better explained using pictures)
Assignment today P. 20 section 1.3 Q 3,5,6,7
Students need to memorize the formula for Area of a square, Area of a rectangle and Area of a triangle. Students also need to know how to use Area to find the length of a side of a square by taking the square root of the Area.
